Thriving on the Waitlist: Five Tips to Support Your Child While Waiting for a Specialist

Whether your child recently received an autism diagnosis or their school team recommended private therapy, you may find yourself facing a waitlist. Better screening and increased awareness mean more children are being referred for services. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough providers to meet the demand.

A waitlist can be frustrating, but there are things you can do to support your child while you wait.

1. Check in with Your Child’s PCP

Even if your child’s primary care provider (PCP) sent you to the specialist with the wait list, it can still help to check back. Your child’s PCP may be able to suggest other providers or alternative treatments.

Waiting can also be a good time to work with your child’s PCP on other medical concerns. For example, some children with autism also experience nutrition or gastrointestinal (GI) concerns. Addressing these concerns can help your child feel comfortable and ready to learn when therapy begins.

2. Contact Early Intervention or Your School

Both Early Intervention (EI) and public schools can offer free services for your child—even if they don’t have a diagnosis. Services can include therapies, home visiting and specialized teaching.

To get started with EI or special education, you’ll need to request an evaluation:

3. Explore Other Providers

Sometimes you need to think outside the box to get past a waitlist. Many PCPs refer families to hospital systems, which often have the longest waits.

Private practices may offer additional options, including providers who accept insurance and those who accept private payment. Search our online directory to search or get a personalized list of options from our staff.

You can also join more than one waitlist. This may help your child begin services sooner.

4. Try Inclusive Programs

Inclusive programs can be a great way to learn tools to support your child and meet other families in the community. Both Music Therapy & More and Inclusive Playgroups give you the chance to learn from experts while connecting with your child.

You can find more inclusive programs in our online directory, browse adapted library programs or check out the CFK Flier Connection on Facebook for upcoming events.

5. Ask Us!

Our Family Resource Specialists are parents, and we’ve been on waitlists too. Schedule a call or submit a Quick Request to get started. We’re here to help.
