Executive Function Resource Guide

Executive function (EF) is a name for the mental skills that help us with:

  • Keeping track of information (also called “working memory”)
  • Flexible thinking
  • Using self-control

EF skills begin to develop in infancy and, according to research, level off between ages 25-30. While all children develop at their own pace, kids with developmental disabilities and some mental health concerns may develop EF skills more slowly than their peers.

Note: Many people believe that ADHD and EF problems are the same, but EF challenges can also show up with autism, anxiety, learning disabilities - like dyslexia, depression and other diagnoses.

Learn about some of the most common ways EF problems impact kids.
