About a quarter of people with ADHD also have an anxiety disorder, which is characterized by frequent, excessive fears and by panic attacks accompanied by dizziness, heart palpitations, or shortness of breath. At the same time, children with ADHD are 20 times more likely to exhibit some signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which include social delays, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors. When all three conditions overlap, parents need an intimate understanding of each diagnosis and some very fine-tuned strategies for managing treatment — and everyday life.
